" Any fire is potentially devastating- My focus is on practical solutions to achieve life safety."
Richard Woodward
Associate Fire Safety Specialist

Following five years military service in the Royal Marines Commandos I then completed twenty seven years as a fire officer working in fire service operations and in fire safety enforcement.   I also have extensive experience of working as a fire safety consultant in the private sector and I have run my own successful consultancy on a part-time basis for over ten years concurrent with my fire service career.

I am a specialist with regard to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) and in the process of fire risk assessment to achieve compliance with the FSO to ensure an adequate level of fire safety in premises.  I have represented West Midlands Fire Service on the CFOA National Enforcement Working Group and have also served as the International General Assembly Representative for the Midlands branch of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE).  In January 2010 I was appointed as a Station Commander, specialist fire safety tutor at the Fire Service College and delivered training on a broad range of fire safety courses to UK and international delegates.  I was further promoted to Group Commander in January 2012 and managed the fire safety delivery team; successfully overseeing the implementation of the national CFOA backed Edexcel national fire safety qualification structure during my tenure.

I retired from West Midlands Fire Service in February 2015 and continue to run my consultancy.  This allows me to continue with my professional development in fire safety matters.  In 2015 I achieved the Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety (Fire Inspectors) to demonstrate my on-going commitment to development. I have been a registered, life safety, fire risk assessor with the Institution of Fire Engineers since 2008 and since 2015 I have been a member of the national review and selection panel for applicants onto the IFE register.

I am extremely proud made to have been made a Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers in June 2017 “having demonstrated significant individual responsibility and exceptional contribution to the fire engineering profession over an extended period of time”.
