Steve's PD Role at NCC for the fantastic new overmoulder

December 13, 2018

NCC has a new  fantastic new overmoulder.

It combines a continuous fibre composite sheet with injection moulded plastic to get the best of both – 2 techniques into 1 automated process.

Used for high volume semi-structural components such as stiffened beams for the automotive industry, our overmoulder can produce a finished composite part in less than 60 seconds.

It will allow industry to develop shorter process chains to reduce cost.

This new capability at the NCC will enable critical R&D work to broaden industry adoption of overmoulded composite parts. We are very delighted to welcome it to our, already world-leading, array of capabilities.

Steve took on the role of PD during the construction phase of the Facility Modification and installation of this remarkable technology. The overmoulder machine is supported by a whole range of supplementary and anciliary equipment. It took Steve a while to draw up the H & S File for this project! Dame Judith Hackitt visited the NCC  for the official opening of this technology.

Fire damaged warehouse successfully demolished

May 22, 2018

CHASE Consulting have recently completed a PD/CDMA appointment for the demolition of a 6,500m2 fire damaged warehouse which previously operated as a recycling facility located at Sharpness Docks.

The fire occurred in December 2016 with the fire service in attendance both at the time of the fire and also subsequently to extinguish the compost piles that continued to smolder sometime after. Working with our Client, Canal & River Trust, along with our colleagues at Ashville and Watts Group our consultants helped to identify the hazards in the building which ranged from:

  • Asbestos materials including the roof sheets which collapsed into the building

  • Hazardous and problematic waste-stream from the composting elements of the buildings function

  • A chemical store

  • Contaminated plant within the building.

  • Structural instability caused by the damage from the fire.

The team were keen to appoint the right contractor who would understand and manage the full extent of the hazards within the building before demolishing the structural elements and removing the plant leaving a clear site. Sanctus were appointed in late 2017 and showed the required competence throughout the works to ensure which saw the licensed disposal of the waste and safe demolition of the warehouse structure. The contractor also scored exemplary in our H&S site inspections via the CHASE Consulting App.

Sanctus recorded a timelapse video of the works which can be viewed using the button below...

Shedding light on CHASE Consulting's work at Diamond Light Source

April 16, 2018

CHASE Consulting Ltd have recently secured our third year of work at the Diamond Light Source facility based at Harwell Science & Innovation Campus located just South of Oxford. The appointment sees the company continuing to provide Principal Designer and CDM Adviser services on a range of construction activities up to April 2019.

So what actually happens at Diamond?

Diamond Light Source is the UK's national Synchrotron. It works like a giant microscope, harnessing the power of electrons to produce bright light that scientists can use to study anything from fossils to jet engines to viruses and vaccines.

The machine accelerates electrons to near light speeds so that they give off light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. These bright beams are then directed off into laboratories known as ‘beamlines’. Here, scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.

Through the team's long standing relationship with this Client we have been fortunate to be part of some fantastic projects including the construction of many of the Beamlines referred to above and more recently some logistically challenging projects such as the installation of four new 20 tonne chillers into a central courtyard plant-room. As a Client always moving forward there are further new build and refurbishment projects proposed for the site which CHASE Consulting Ltd are excited to be a part of.

More information on Diamond Light Source and the fascinating things they get up to can be found by  visiting www.diamond.ac.uk

Did you know that CHASE Consulting is working with the National Composites Centre in Bristol?

March 21, 2018

Since September 2017 CHASE Consulting have been providing a qualified Principal Designer and Health & Safety consultancy service to support the NCC’s capital acquisition programme. This programme has secured funding of £37M to introduce 10 new manufacturing capabilities to the NCC for the benefit of the UK’s manufacturing industry. Several facility modification projects are now well underway which will support planned improvements to the existing technological capability of this centre. We continue to engage with the NCC Facilities Modification Project teams. By challenging and supporting these teams at design review meetings, risk is removed by design wherever possible.

We are also providing a health & safety service to the NCC’s Capital Acquisition Team, in preparation for and during their factory acceptance testing of new machines that will investigate manufacturing processes for aerospace products of the future. One example of our contribution has been the development of a PUWER checklist, which we are pleased to confirm, has served these project teams well.

We understand that some of our clients require clarification in order to understand and apply the CDM 2015 regulations. At the NCC, we have been able to consult on this and happily support the development of policy and procedures that will secure compliance for the NCC.

The capital acquisition programme stretches out over two years so, we are delighted to have secured such a prestigious contract where we can continue to provide great health and safety and legal compliance.

Capital Projects work at the University of Bristol

March 14, 2018

CHASE Consulting continue to work closely with our colleagues within Capital Projects at The University of Bristol. It's been a busy start to the year, maintaining the Enhanced CDM-A  provision as part of the Framework.

We have also been engaged to offer early design advice on a number of exciting future projects including the University's £80m Library. This will be a significant addition to the new Campus Heart Programme which includes refurbishment works to Senate House, The Indoor Sports Centre and Tyndal Avenue Public Realm along with the completion of the Fry Building renovations. Together with newly pedestrianised elements to Students daily routes, all of these projects will really enhance the Student experience.

Of course, there's a lot of design & construction to be done before the University's vision is realised and the CHASE team at Bristol are ideally placed to provide on-site, professional advice & guidance and help coordinate a number of large-scale projects through to completion & beyond.

The facility replicates a real-life construction site, with industry-standard plant, machinery and equipment, and enables construction site behaviours and standards to be taught alongside specific technical knowledge and skills.

ISO 45001 has successfully passed the FDIS (Final Draft International Standard) ballot.

It brings occupational health and safety management and continual improvement into the heart of an organization. This new standard is an opportunity for organizations to align their strategic direction with their OH&S management system. In addition, there is an increased focus on improving occupational health and safety performance.

The standard follows the generic management system structure used for ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. It was based initially on OHSAS 18001, but also takes account of other influential documents, such as the International Labour Organization's ILO-OSH Guidelines and various national occupational safety and health management system standards.

The final standard is expected to publish in March 2018 and the current OHSAS 18001 will be withdrawn upon its publication. Organisations currently certified to OHSAS 18001 will have a three year period to upgrade to ISO 45001.

Let CHASE Consulting help you get ready for the changes.
